What is Sustainability?

Sustainability refers to use natural resources wisely and responsibly to assure the availability of natural resources to our future generations also. It depends upon various factors like environmental, economic, and social considerations, aims to balance these factors for a long-term well-being in our planet.

Key Features of Sustainability:

  • Environmental Sustainability:

This means, protect our environment,to conserve natural resources, and to minimize pollution.That means shift to renewable energy resources, reduce waste, and to preserve biodiversity .

  • Economic Sustainability:

Economic Sustainability means it mainly focuses on  economic activities are adaptable and beneficial over a  long period of time, without causing any damage to natural resources and environment.

  • Social Sustainability
  • This factor emphasize social equity, social justice, and well-being of all. It means,all the people in Earth meet their basic needs, impartial labor practices, and community participation.

 

These are the three pillars of sustainability that are interconnected with each other. For example, any damage in environment  that leads to economic hardship and social inequalities. Therefore, true sustainability is a holistic approach that covers all in these three dimensions.

According to UN Brundtland Commission Report,1987 Our Common Future,

  • Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
  • Finding a balance between economic development, social progress, and environmental protection.
  • Adopting practices that can be sustained over the long term without causing harm to our Earth and Environment.
